It was founded in 1971 when a group of people from British Columbia sailed from Vancouver to Amchitka, Alaska to protest the testing of nuclear weapons that were set to take place there and were successful in doing so. This group called themselves “Greenpeace” as it combined their goals of helping the environment and of creating a world that was free from the fear of nuclear war.
